A First P(r)ost, and an Introduction!

Hello, and welcome to my corner of the web! My name is Ben (3wordsBen on Untappd), and please let me quickly introduce myself. I'm Australian, but I live in the middle of Germany. Why you ask? Well, I have a PhD in statistics, and I moved here to do a postdoc. So far it's been pretty fun. But more importantly, why have I started this blog?

Well, I love beer. I love drinking, and reading about beer. I love learning about beer and the brewing process. I especially love trawling Youtube videos about beer and microbreweries (see my favourite channel, The Craft Beer Channel), but you get the idea! I also love all types of beer: light lagers, sweet and/or salty sours, refreshing session ales, fruit beers, hoppy IPAs, juicy NEIPAs, nutty brown ales, thick black stouts.......I love them all. Well, almost all of them, but with two main exceptions: I'm yet to find a smoked beer that I've liked (liquid bacon, yay...), and I genuinely believe that barley wines are just poorly labelled rocket ships, with no seatbelts, that take you to the planet drunk, with no warning or invitation. Having said that, I still continue to try them at every available opportunity, just in case I discover "the one" (and because of the name of the planet).

I also believe that a good drink, and a good person, can lead to a brilliant conversation, a fun night, and sometimes a new friend. In some cases it can even lead to a game of electronic darts, and some of the worst karaoke I've ever applauded (I mean, were there physical darts, or were we pretending to throw them and the machine worked it out? Why was everyone Korean, but I was in an Australian city? Should beer be served in towers?? It's a mystery, and one I never intend to solve).

However, I also believe that an average beer can be fun.  I mean, can you appreciate nice weather without experiencing the rain? Or maybe another way to put it is, would Christmas still be magical if it was Christmas every day? So, I think good beers become great beers when you have something not great to compare them to. They also make terrible movies into instant classics.

So, in the interest of tasting these beers so that you don't have to (and you can infer how great your beer is by comparison), I'm going to review every kind of beer. I'll review good ones, because it's a great excuse for a functioning booze fanatic to drink more of the sweet nectar of the gods. I'll review average beers because you can't just drink great beer all the time (and they're cheaper), and what we drink most of the time anyway. Finally, I'll review some absolute train wreck beers, because I'm hoping to get a laugh out of it.

So please come along for my ride through Europe (and everywhere else I travel) as I explore the world, and my new home town of Jena, pint glass by pint glass.

  1. Wow. You seem super cool, and very relatable. Technically, I'm your only follower, but I expect to see that number almost double! Keep up the middling work!
